The Beers biography of 1906 includes, on pages 130 and 131, something of the life of Robert Gibb Stewart, son of George Stewart and Jean Gibb. According to his biography, he married Laura Stockdale in Moore Township on 17 January, 1894. By all means there should be a marriage registration for this marriage, but one has not been found. Michigan marriages have been checked, but, again, nothing found. |

| Note | Beers 1906 Biographies of Lambton County has on page 528 a biography for Robert Francis Stockdale, 1800-1856. He was Laura Stockdale's grandfather. Page 529 names his children, one of them being John. Page 530 continues the family's background with a paragraph for John Stockdale, and this in turn names his daughter as Laura, who married Robert Gibb Stewart. The family does appear to have been in Moore Township from early days, and it does appear that it was here that Laura was born. It should be said that the parents of Robert Francis Stockdale, George Stockdale, born Yorkshire, England, in approximately 1803 and who died in 1856, and his wife Elizabeth Coombs, 1813-1894, were the first Stockdale settlers in Moore Township. They were Anglican and a list of family members is to be found in the Lambton County OGS transcription in Sutherland (Anglican) Cemetery in Moore Township. In the same plot are buried George Coombs, born approximtely 1772 and died in 1868 at age 94, and his wife Elizabeth, 1774-1872. There are two generations on opposite sides of the same stone. In other words George Stockdale and his Coombs wife are on opposite sides the stone for the elder George Coombs and his wife Elizabeth. The transcription for Moore Union Cemetery as done by the Lambton branch of the OGS shows Laura Stockdale's dates of birth and death: Dec 7, 1873 to Dec 17, 1944. Death reg. 075455-44 Moore Twp., Lambton Co. Laura Stewart died in Moore Township on December 17th, 1944. Residence lot 29, Front Concession. Widowed. Born Ontario on December 7, 1873. Parents John Stockdale, born Ontario, and Annie Neal, born United States. Physician C. A. Henrich. Informant Mrs. Edwin White, RR1, Mooretown, Ont., daughter. Burial Decemmber 19,1944. |
