Page 129 of the 1906 Beers' Lambton Biographies tells that Mary 'died in Moore Township (Lambton County) in her youth.' A place of burial for Mary has been sought, but not found. What may be said is that she was indeed young when she died. Mary's mother had married James Nisbet after the death of her husband. The earliest census record for which we are able to find the Nisbet's is that of 1861. Here is shown Mary, the second Nisbet child, at age 21, which would place her birth to about 1840. We must believe that Mary Stewart was dead by the time the second Mary came along. This might sound odd today, but wasn't uncommon in the naming patterns of these early years. George's biography has it that he and Mary, with their mother and step-father, James Nisbet, settled in Moore Township, apparently in short order. They were first at Bear Creek, but not for too long before moving to the St. Clair River front in Moore. The biography tells that Mary Stewart died in her youth and the best we may say is that she died between 1834 and 1840. There is a cemetery at Bear Creek, but it was established in the 1850s. Was Mary buried on a family farm? No date has been found for the Moore Union Cemetery's establishment. She may well be buried there and her gravestone has not survived. It is possible that a church record exists. There were no such things as civil death registrations prior to July of 1869. |
