Note | The Beers 1906 Biography for George Stewart, on page 129, only tells us that John Stewart died in 1828. He may well have died in West Calder, but the biography doesn't say so. It's fairly evident that John Stewart and Mary Gowans had but two children, George who was born in 1825 and Mary born in 1827. Baptisms are found for George and Mary, but no other baptisms for possible children show up and, considering John Stewart's dearly demise, there likely were but two. Almost immediately after the marriage of Mary Gowans Stewart to James Nisbet the couple, with children George and Mary, sailed to Canada. The Beers biography has it that Mary died in Moore Township of what became Lambton County in her youth. See notes for Mary, but it may be said that, other than her baptism, no record for her has been found. Prior to the establishment of the county system of local governance, there were Districts. Moore Township was in the Western District of Upper Canada/Canada West until Lambton County was created in very approximately 1850. |
