| Note | Robert Treat Perine was married twice. His first wife was Kate McArthur and information for Kate may be found on Find-a-Grave. This is someone else's work and won't be repeated as such here. I will mention that a newspaper clipping which carried her obituary tells that Robert and Kate were married in New York State in 1880. This explains her presence in Doon (Waterloo Township) in the 1881 census where she is shown as 'Catte', age 23, and the wife of Robert Perine. This 1881 census page is interesting. (It's fairly readable as presented by Ancestry, though perhaps a better copy may be obtained from the website of Library & Archives Canada.) Robert is shown as age 22, a year younger than Catte, or Kate. But also in the household is a child, born March, Hattie (or Kattie). Also present is a Mary Sizer, age 14, and Sarah Perine, age 43. Sarah is the widow (third wife) of Joseph Southworth Perine who died the previous year. As for Mary Sizer: Robert's mother was Harriet Ann Sizer. She died the year that Robert was born. Harriet had a brother Charles O. Sizer who came to Canada at some point and died in 1877. He had a wife, Matilda, and she died in 1879. They are buried in the Doon Presbyterian Church Cemetery. We find that Mary Sizer, full name Mary Augustus Sizer, age 14 at the time of the 1881 census, was the daughter of Charles and Matilda. She died in 1894, in Waterloo Township (probably Doon) and is buried with her parents, though her name on her grave stone is shown as Mame A. Sizer. When Dr. Hawk (of Galt) filed her death registration he described her as an Orphan, though she was age 28 at the time. The short story is that Mary Sizer was Robert Perine's first cousin. |
