Farrar, nephew, 42 Hilda Ave., Hamilton. Burial December 2, 1948, Hamilton Cemetery. Isabella is buried with her first husband William Henry Hardy in Section Q of Hamilton Cemetery. Her portion of the gravestone inscription reads: Isabelle Tilt Perine, 1860-1948, and with this information it is evident that she married a second time. Find-a-Grave is certainly of some assistance, but also of great help are newspaper notices that are to be found with the use of the search engine for Old Fulton New York Postcards. With this information it is reasonably safe to say that her second husband was Robert Treat Perine, 1859-1916, - and thanks here to Find-a-Grave for helping to sort this out. Robert is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois. He is apparently buried near to his first wife Katie McArthur. The Find-a-Grave website includes newspaper clippings that fill in something of the story, while not clearly naming his second wife, Isabella. More is to be found, however. Firstly, Ancestry has a database Cook County, Illinois, U.S., Marriages Index, 1871-1920 (text only) This records the marriage of Isabella Hardy, age 52, birth about 1861, on October 9, 1913, at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, to Robert T. Perine, age 54. This might not be thoroughly convincing, but the associated newspaper clippings on the Find-a-Grave webpage tell something of his trip to Waukegan from Toronto where he and Mrs. Perine resided. She returned home and he was to follow, but fell ill due to diabetes and died. The clipping does not mention his second wife's name but does tell that they were childhood friends and schoolmates and had been married some four years. It goes on to tell that his father was a twine manufacturer at Doon in Ontario and that the family home was there for some years. This certainly makes it entirely probable that Robert and Isabella were acquainted from childhood. The 1861 census of Wilmot Township of Waterloo County shows Robert T. Perine, age 2, with his parents Joseph and Rhoda Perine. Joseph is shown as a flax miller. The 1871 census has Robert, age 12, with his parents, Joseph and Rhoda, in Waterloo Township. Here, Joseph is shown as a manager. Associated census pages which would indicate neighbours suggest that the Perines resided in the Blair-Doon vicinity. These villages are close together. The page headings show the enumeration to be for South Waterloo. This is almost certainly to do with the south portion of Waterloo Township. Indexing places this as actually being Galt and this seems quite unlikely. Admittedly, some of the clearly Galt pages are headed the same way, but the pages that cover the Perines are almost certainly not Galt. The census pages show the Perine family to be Presbyterian and the Doon Presbyterian Cemetery transcription indicates the presence of a sizeable Perine plot, although Joseph and Rhoda are not buried there. When Isabella died in 1948 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton, her death registration showed her residence as 753 Main Street East. The 1947 Vernon's City Directory for Hamilton shows Mrs. J. C. Farrar at 753 Main Street East. Mrs. Farrar was Jane Tilt, Isabella's half sister - and, indeed, the 1935 Vernon's City Directory shows Isabel Perine (widow Robt), at 753 Main Street East. It's safe to say that the sisters were living together. |
