Mary Ann Green
ID # 8827, (1814-1905)
Birth | Mary Ann Green was born on 9 March 1814 at Waterloo, Upper Canada. |
Marriage | She married Thomas Cosens, son of Charles Cosens and Ann Goodchild. |
Death | She died on 30 March 1905 at Caro, Tuscola County, Michigan, at age 91. |
Burial | She was buried on 2 April 1905 at Sylvan United Church Cemetery, West Williams Twp.. |
Note | Census enumerations for the years 1851 (really, January of 1852), 1861, both of which were in Wilmot Township, and the 1871 census taken in West Williams Township of Middlesex County, all show the wife of Thomas Cosens to be Ann and she is shown fairly consistently to be of an age for a birth year to be that of approximately 1814-15. We know Ann's maiden name to be Green from the death registration of her daughter, Charlotte Cosens McPherson. Charlotte died in Caro, Tuscola County, Michigan, on December 18, 1928, and her father is shown to be Thomas Cosens, born England, and Anne Green, born Canada. This has a certain logic to it, for the 1851 census records Thomas Cosens and his wife Ann on the same page as a John and Harriet Green and a Cyrus and Mary Ann Green, both with large families. The ages of these two Green men, John and Cyrus, are such that Ann is almost certainly their sister. The Stauffer Family Abandoned Cemetery in Wilmot Township has a stone for John and Harriet Green that includes two of their children, but it also has an inscription for a John Green who died April 22, 1847, at the age of 65 years and 11 months. No name for a wife of the elder John Green is shown. It is likely that he is that father of the Green brothers of Wilmot and also Ann Green Cosens. Which then brings us to Ann as she is shown in the 1900 U.S. census at Wisner Township, Tuscola County, Michigan, and her death registration. The 1900 census shows Ann Cousins with James and Charlotte McPherson. Charlotte is her daughter. Ann's month and year of birth are shown as March, 1814. She is shown as having had 15 children of whom 10 are still living. Her death registration reads as follows: State of Michigan, Certificate of Death County Tuscola, Village Caro Mrs. Anne Cosens died March 30, 1905 Birth March 9, 1814. Age 91 yrs., 0 months, 21 days. Married at age 23. Parent of 15 children of whom 9 are still living. Born Waterloo, Ontario (probably Waterloo Township). Parents John Green, born Pennsylvania, and Elizabeth Glasby, born Ontario. Physician's name illegible. Informant O. C. McPherson, Caro, Michigan. Burial April 2nd, 1905, at Sylvan, Ont. Ann's husband Thomas is buried in Sylvan Cemetery in West Williams Township of Middlesex County, and we must reasonably believe that Ann is buried there as well. A difficulty is that her name is not to be found on a gravestone in the transcription of Sylvan Cemetery as done by the Middlesex County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Neither has a photo of her gravestone been found with Find-a-Grave or CanGenWeb. (The first transcription of this cemetery was done in 1982 by the 71st London Guides & Brownies.) The death registration places Ann's burial in Sylvan. Burial plans could be changed, but, if so in Ann's case, an alternative place of burial has not been found. Ann is shown in this tree with the given names of Mary Ann. This is taken from the marriage registrations of several of her children. |
