Note | The Nolan family came to Canada in 1883 aboard the Caspian. Indexing indicates that they boarded at Cobh in Ireland. An endorsement against their names would seem to indicate that they disembarked at Halifax. This may not be correct. It is possible that they disembarked at Quebec City. (There is an imposition of the word 'Halifax' over a ditto sign, which would otherwise indicate Quebec City as their destination for disembarking.) The approximate birth years of their children as they appear on census information vary and this includes such entries as found on their gravestones. Their first five known children as listed on the Caspian's passenger list are shown as: Thomas 11 Anna 10 Kate 7 James 6 Nora (Honora) 2 One child, Martin, did not survive to make the trip, for he does not appear on the passenger list. They had one child after arriving in Canada - John Patrick, born in 1883. Dates of birth for the children of John and Mary Agnes vary considerably, whether appearing on census information, death registrations, gravestones, or as might be approximated from ages given at the time of marriages. The first four children, however, have birth records. These are to be found on a database entitled Ireland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911. These dates are shown for Thomas, Mary Anne, Martin, and James. Dates of birth in such a database have yet to be found for Catherine and Honora. Death reg. 021191-04 Blenheim Twp., Oxford Co. John Joseph Nolan died April 15, 1904. Age 53. Residence lot 13, concession 7. Laborer. Born Ireland. Roman Catholic. Physician and informant J. A. Mitchell. |
