NoteThe 1851 census in Woolwich Township shows John and his parents as Lutheran. Just what the family was at the time of the 1861 census isn't clearly entered.

The 1871 census in Woolwich shows 'none' under the religion column, which probably isn't entirely accurate.

At the time of their marriage, in 1874, John and Elizabeth were members of the New Jerusalem Church which followed the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg. It is understood that there is still a New Jerusalem Church in the Kitchener area.

The 1881 census shows John and Elizabeth with son Jacob, age 3. The family is shown as 'Swedenb.', which would be the New Jerusalem Church.

By the time of the 1891 census, still in Woolwich, John, Elizabeth, and their family are shown as Lutherans.
