James Williamson
ID # 8511, (1811-)
Birth | James Williamson was born in 1811 at Scotland. |
Marriage | He married Mary McLeish, daughter of George McLeish and Margaret Erskine, on 9 August 1871 at Ingersoll, Oxford Co., Ontario. Mrge reg. Ingersoll, Oxford Co. Jas. Williamson, 60, widower, cabinet maker, Presbyterian. Born Scotland, residing Wawanosh. Parents Jas. and Christina Williamson. Mary McLeish, 44, spinster, born Dumfries, residing Ingersoll. Parents George and Margaret McLeish. Witnesses Roderick Williamson and Jessie Williamson, both of Ingersoll. On 9th Aug., 1871, at residence of Jas. McDogald, Ingersoll. by W. D. Hughson, minister. James' residence, Wawanosh, might have been East or West Wawanosh, either being a township in Huron County. Mary may or may not have been born in Dumfries Township, at the time a township in the Gore District, but since it is recorded as such on her marriage registration, and that we believe she must have had some input in the information, we show this as her place of birth. |
Note | A death registration for James Williamson has not been found. The 1851 census just may have him with wife Elizabeth in Hamilton, though this is not certain. More reasonably, we may say that he was in Ingersoll in Oxford County as of the 1861 census. He is shown as single, though with such family he has present he may more reasonably be a widower, perhaps with a sister present in the household. The 1871 census, begun April 2nd, shows him in West Wawanosh, Huron County, as a carpenter and a widower. Also present is a William Williamson, age 9. We may reasonably believe that this is the James Williamson who married Mary McLeish in Ingersoll in August of 1871, for he shows his place of residence as Wawanosh. In 1881, he is with wife Mary in Lucknow of Bruce County and, likewise, he and Mary are still there in 1891. Going by a photograph of a badly worn and broken stone, it is just possible that he is buried with an Elizabeth Williamson in Section 8 of the Presbyterian Cemetery in Woodstock. The photograph is to be found on the Oxford County Cemeteries. None of this is certain. |
