Duncan Shepherd
ID # 8497, (1852-1944)
Father | Duncan Shepherd (1802-1886) |
Mother | Margaret McLeish (1818-1892) |
Birth | Duncan Shepherd was born on 7 June 1852 at Galt, Waterloo Co., Canada West. |
Marriage | He married Mary Carnie on 26 October 1905 at Stanley Twp., Huron Co.. Mrge Reg. 010574-05 Stanley Twp., Huron Co. Duncan Shepherd, 52, bachelor, engineer, Presbyterian. Born and residing Galt. Parents Duncan Shepherd and Marg. McLeish. Mary Carnie, 40, spinster, Presbyterian. Born and residing Stanley. Parents illeg. and Mary Carnie. Witnesses Alex Mitchell of Varna and Sarah Allan of Blake. On Oct. 26, 1905, by Thos. Davidson. Mary's parents are written on the registration as something approximating Joes and Mary Carnie. Duncan Shepherd was the informant when his wife Mary died in Galt in 1932. He shows Mary's parents as William Carnie and Rachel Miller. Mary, born approximately 1865, is shown as a daughter of William and Rachel from the 1871 census onward. William and Rachel, however, were in Paris, Brant County, at the time of the 1861 census as was also a John Carnie and his wife Margaret. They have with them a daughter Mary, age 8, who we may say was born in approximately 1853. William and John were almost certainly brothers. Both are shown as being born Scotland and their trade was that of mason. John and Margaret are buried in Paris Cemetery. William and Rachel are buried in Bayfield Cemetery in Huron County. There could be more to the story, but Duncan was probably correct when he showed William and Rachel as Mary's parents. |
Death | He died on 25 December 1944 at Hyde Park, London Twp., Middlesex Co., at age 92. |
Burial | He was buried on 27 December 1944 at Sec. 3, Mountview Cemetery, Galt, Waterloo Co.. |
Note | Duncan Shepherd Jr., age 8, first appears in the 1861 census of Canada West in Nichol Township in Wellington County. According to his father's obituary, they were almost certainly in Elora at the time. He is there with his father, mother, and two sisters, Almira and Isabella. Duncan's place of birth is shown on his marriage and death registrations as Galt. This is almost certainly correct, though the family will have moved shortly after to Owen Sound. According to his father's obituary, the family was there for seven years and then in Elora Village for three years before returning to Galt. This is essentially why they are recorded as being in Nichol Township at the time of the 1861 census. This is where Elora is located. The 1871 census has Duncan Jr. in Galt with his parents and sisters. His father is shown as a carpenter; his mother is shown as a tailoress; Almira, 20, is shown as a dressmaker, and Isabella, 15, is shown as a seamstress. Rather one off, Duncan Jr., though in Galt, is shown as a farmer. Whether this precisely meant that he had land of his own or was farm labour cannot for the moment be said. Also, were his mother and sisters working with dressmaking at home or were they working in Galt's textile industry? Duncan Jr. and sister Almira have yet to be found in the 1881 census, however when Duncan Sr. died in March of 1886, his obituary has Almira (not directly named) living with her parents and Duncan Jr. farming with John Milroy of East Dumfries. Duncan Jr. and his sister Almira have yet to be found in the 1891 census, but they are in Galt as of the 1901 census and living under the same roof. The writing on the 1901 page isn't entirely clear, but Duncan appears to be a fireman. His date of birth is shown as June 7, 1853. His death registration shows this as June 7, 1852, and this will be closer to correct. Duncan Jr. and Mary Carnie were married in 1905. By the time of the 1911 census, Duncan and Mary are in Galt and he is shown as caretaker in the public library. The 1914-15 Vernon's City Directory for Galt has Duncan at 426 Macadamized Road in Galt. As of the 1921 census, Duncan and Mary are at 426 Dundas Street in Galt. The 1930 Vernon's Directory has Ducan and Mary at 26 Todd Street in Galt and this is where they were living when Mary died in 1932. Duncan was in Hyde Park, outside of London, Ontario, as of the 1940 Voters' list and he evidently died there in 1944. Death reg. 005359-44 Hyde Park, London Township, Middlesex Co. Duncan Shepherd died December 25, 1944, at Hyde Park. Widower. Born Galt. Age 92 yrs., 6 mos., 18 dys. Date of birth June 7, 1852. Profession stationery engineer in a foundry.
