| Note | Rev. Strang of First Church in Galt was rather loathe to name of parents of those baptized. With Almira we can be of no doubt, for she was baptized on January 12, 1851, with her full name, Almira Fisher Shepherd. This full name also appears on her death registration. The 1851 census in Galt, taken in early January of 1852, shows 'Almyra' Shepherd with her parents and older sister Margaret. She is shown as age 2 (as of her next birthday, which should be about right.) In 1861, Almira is present with her parents and two younger siblings in Nichol Township of Wellington County. In 1871, the family is back in Galt and Almira is shown as age 20 and still with her parents. Almira has not been found in the 1881 or 1891 Canadian censuses. In 1901, 'Elmira', so shown, is with her brother Duncan in Galt. Her date of birth is given as Nov. 21, 1850. Almira Shepherd is found in Lucknow in the 1911 census. She is shown as the niece of Mary Willismson and she, Mary, is certainly Almira's Aunt Mary McLeish. As Almira died in 1914 in Lucknow so did her aunt, Agnes McLeish Oliver, do the same in 1903. Death reg. 008849-14 Lucknow, Bruce Co. Almira Fisher Shepherd died 23rd June, 1914. Age 63 yrs., 7 months. Born Galt. Single. Place of death Lucknow. Parents Duncan Shepherd and Margaret Shepherd. Physician Dr. A. G. Elliott. Informant Mrs. Locke, Woodstock, Ont. Mrs. Locke of Woodstock, Ontario, was Almira's sister, Isabella (Bella), and it was Bella who was the informant for the death of Mary McLeish Williamson when she died in Woodstock in 1917. Since Mary McLeish Williamson died in Woodstock, it seems probable that Bella was caring for her in her last years. Almira is buried in Section 3 of Mountview Cemetery, Galt, with her parents and brother Duncan Jr. Her mother's maiden name is shown on the gravestone as McLeish. |
