Adam Marshall Oliver

ID # 8492, (1828-1917)
BirthAdam Marshall Oliver was born on 2 May 1828 at Scotland.
MarriageHe married Agnes McLeish, daughter of George McLeish and Margaret Erskine, on 27 September 1855 at Galt, Waterloo Co., Canada West.
Per the 3rd October, 1855, edition of the Dumfries Reformer, Adam Marshall Oliver was married to Agnes McLeish. Both were of Dumfries Township. They were married in Galt on 27 September, 1855, by the Rev. Hamilton Gibson, who, at the time, was minister at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.

For all the McLeish family's association with First Church, which was on the east side of the Grand River, Adam and Agnes were married at St. Andrew's, which was on the west side of the Grand. From some records found, it does appear that the Oliver family attended St. Andrew's.

The transcriptions of the Dumfries Reformer are provided by the Waterloo branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.

DeathHe died in October 1917 at Ontario at age 89.
NoteAdam's date of birth, May 2, 1828, is taken from the 1901 census in Galt.

When it comes to a death registration for Adam, someone messed up for we must believe that there are two of them.

(Beverly Township of Wentworth County and North Dumfries of Waterloo County are adjacent. Apparently the Oliver residence was in the Branchton area of North Dumfries. This lies very close to the border with Beverly Township. The villages of Sheffield, in Beverly, and Branchton are close to Galt and were mainly serviced by Galt doctors.)

Whatever one might think of the above, the logic of the return is that Adam as well as Agnes should be buried in Mountview Cemetery in Galt. Indeed, an index shows that an Adam M. Oliver is buried in Section 3 of Mountview. When the transcription for this section is viewed, it is found that this Adam, perhaps a grandson, died in 1891 at the age of one year and five months.

A burial record for Adam and Agnes has yet to be found.

Probably, newspaper death notices for Adam and Agnes exist and these may provide the place of burial. They have yet to be found.

Anyone having access to the Cambridge City Archives where microfilm for the Galt Reporter is to be found, may be able to sort out the story for both Agnes and Adam. There may well be a proper obituary for Agnes. Given that Adam died during the War years and the papers were full of such news, a death notice as placed by the family is probably the best that can be hoped for.

See notes for Agnes. They are surely buried in Mountview Cemetery in Galt.
