| Marriage | She married Adam Marshall Oliver on 27 September 1855 at Galt, Waterloo Co., Canada West. Per the 3rd October, 1855, edition of the Dumfries Reformer, Adam Marshall Oliver was married to Agnes McLeish. Both were of Dumfries Township. They were married in Galt on 27 September, 1855, by the Rev. Hamilton Gibson, who, at the time, was minister at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. For all the McLeish family's association with First Church, which was on the east side of the Grand River, Adam and Agnes were married at St. Andrew's, which was on the west side of the Grand. From some records found, it does appear that the Oliver family attended St. Andrew's. | Note | The 1901 census page in Galt that lists Adam and Agnes Oliver dates their births. Agnes' is shown as December 25, 1833. Agnes' date of baptism, February 16, 1834, was at First Church in Galt. This appears on page 2 of First's baptisms, which may be found dating back to 1833. This appears on microfilm LCM-30 at the United Church of Canada Archives. Agnes' parents, George and Margaret McLeish, appear on the 1824 list of communicants. No evidence has been found of another McLeish family attending First Church. It's frustrating that for some 20 years Rev. James Strang chose to enter the names and dates of children baptized without naming their parents, but we take from such evidence as may be found, census evidence in particular, and say with some safety that she was George and Margaret's daughter. For reasons unknown, we do not find a full range of baptisms for all of George and Margaret's children. It may be that for a time at least George and Margaret spent some time in New York State. As to Agnes' passing and with a bit of research, we may safely say the following death registration is hers. Death reg. 006258-03 Lucknow, Bruce Co. Agnes Oliver died March 20, 1903, age 78., Residence Lucknow. Born Ontario. Presbyterian. Physician and informant Dr. A. G. Elliott. The City of Cambridge Archives has a marvelous collection of burial cards and these may be downloaded. One has been found for Agnes which does identify the above death registration for her in Lucknow as being correct: Died in Lucknow Friday morning March 20th, 1903 Agnes McLeish, beloved wife of Adam M. Oliver. In her 70th year The funeral will take place from her late residence near Branchton on Monday afternoon, March 23rd, at 2 o'clock to Mountview Cemetery, Galt Friends and acquaintances will please accept this intimation Galt, March 20th, 1903 All that said, the exact place of burial for Agnes and Adam has yet to be found in the available transcription information for Mountview Cemetery. The available transcription of Mountview was done by the Waterloo branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. They recorded gravestones, but were also given access to burial cards, which they recorded when stones were not present. |
