| Note | A toss-up here. Vol. 7 of the Annals of the Forty, Grimsby Historical Society, reprint 1992, see page 76, has it that Michael Rittenhouse was born on March 6, 1815. Rev. A. J. Fretz, in his 1896 work relating to the descendants of Christian and Hans Meyer, page 86, tells that Michael H. Rittenhouse was born on March 15, 1815. The Annals just might have the edge. Death reg. 010405-88 Clinton Twp., Lincoln Co. Michael H. Rittenhouse died November 13, 1888. Age 73 yrs., 8 mos. Farmer. Mennonite. Born Clinton Tp., Lincoln Co. Physician and informant W. A. Comfort of Campden. Michael's gravestone as transcribed by the Niagara Peninsula branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, shows his age at time of death as 70 yrs. and 8 mos. Fretz and the Annals agree. The Annals does mention that the history of the Canadian branch was provided by Mr. J. E. Culp of Vineland. Michael's age in the 1851 census appears to be understated and would suggest he was born in 1822. The 1861 census appears to be closer to his real age. |
