Lincoln County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. William Hewson, Baptist Church, Beamsville

Jacob F. Rittenhouse, 27, born and residing Clinton (township). Parents John and Eliz'th.
Agnes Wismer, 21, born and residing Louth (township). Parents John and Agnes.
Witness H. T. Wismer of Louth.
On Feby. 1, 1859

The registrar's handwriting is very poor. Jacob's marriage to Barbara Kratz shows his parents to be John and Elizabeth. This is a reasonable interpretation. His marriage to Agnes looks rather more as though his parents were Jacob and Elizabeth. Casting back to the 1851 census in Clinton Township, 18 year old Jacob is with parents John and Elizabeth. Since the handwriting on this registration is, at the least, questionable, and since Elizabeth Hancocks in her index for the county marriages of Lincoln & Welland reads the parents for both of Jacob's marriages as John and Elizabeth, it is shown as the same here. See notes for John B. Rittenhouse.

DeathShe died on 25 March 1865 at Lincoln County at age 27.
NoteA remarkable amount of information for the Jacob Rittenhouse family is to be found in A. J. Fretz's A Brief History of Jacob Wismer, 1893, Mennonite Publishing Co., Elkhart, Indiana. Page 232 has a paragraph for Jacob F. Rittenhouse, which dates his birth to Oct. 24, 1834; his marriage to Agnes to 1 Feby., 1859 (which agrees with the Lincoln County marriage register); and also dates Agnes' death to March 25, 1865. For the moment, the only information not found is Agnes' place of burial.

The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid does show an Agnes Wismer buried in Jordan Mennonite Cemetery in what was formerly known as Louth Township in Lincoln County. This Agnes, however, was the mother of Agnes who married Jacob F. Rittenhouse.

Jacob Rittenhouse and his second wife Barbara Kratz are buried in Campden Mennonite Cemetery in Clinton Township as are two of the daughters of Jacob and Agnes. Agnes Wismer Rittenhouse will probably be buried in either Jordan or Campden Mennonite cemeteries, but, with her death being in 1865, we must believe that her gravestone has not survived.

Further note:

The May, 1865, edition of the Herald of Truth has a brief obituary for Agnes. It reads:

Near Jordan, Lincoln Co., C. W., on the 25th of March, of consumption, from which she suffered nearly two years, Agnes wife of Jacob Rittenhouse, aged 27 years and 1 day. She leaves 3 children.

Unquote.

Jordan is in Louth Township, but not far from the border of Clinton Township. Her obituary does not place her burial and we are not clear as to her place of death. It does appear that she probably died in Louth Township.
