Steward
Baptized

Joseph son of Robert Steward of the township of Rawdon, blacksmith, and of Mary (by her maiden name Copping) his wife, was born on August the fifteenth and baptized on September twenty third, one thousand eight hundred and forty nine.

The handwriting of the minister's name isn't entirely clear, but a church history of Christchurch, Rawdon, to be found on line, tells that Charles Rollit was priest-in-charge from 1846-1865.

Note: No doubt all the children of Robert and Mary were baptized, but, as of this writing, only a baptism for son Joseph has been found.

Death reg. 015937-23 Dunnville, Haldimand Co.
Joseph Steward died April 6, 1923, at the corner of Forest and Pine Streets. Married. Age 70 yrs., 7 mos., 22 dys. Date of birth August 15, 1852. Retired farmer. Residence at place of death 3 yrs. Parents Robert Steward, born England, and Mary Copping, born Quebec. Physician Dr. D. Rigg. Informant Mrs. J. Steward, Dunnville. Burial April 9, 1923, Pelham Township, Welland Co.

Reports of the year of Joseph's birth vary. The 1851 census wasn't begun until January 12, 1852. The age question asked was: What is your age as of your next birthday? The answer for Joseph was 3, which would date his birth to 1849. The 1901 census at Wainfleet dates his birth year to to 1851, which is clearly wrong.

It did happen that a child was born and given a name, only to pass away in infancy and a later child would sometimes receive the same name. Since the baptism record dates Joseph's birth to the 15th of August and the 1901 census dates it to the 15th of August, it's apparent that we are recording the same person.
