Joseph Priestman
ID # 8375, (1842-)
Father | Joseph Priestman (1809-1887) |
Mother | Elizabeth Shotwell (1816-1871) |
Birth | Joseph Priestman was born in 1842. |
Marriage | He married Irene Graybiel, daughter of John Graybiel and Delora (--?--), in September 1864 at Welland County. Before entering the information for this marriage, it should be said that, obviously, the information is seriously mixed up. Either the clergyman submitted the record to the Welland County registrar in mixed up condition, or the registrar made the mess. The marrying clergyman was Rev. John Baxter of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. He filed a return of four marriages for the year 1864. The two middle marriages of the four listed were those of Joseph Priestman and Edwin Minor. Their brides, Ellen Berry and Irene Greybiel, are confused. Parents for all are mixed up. There are two marriages dates, one, 8 Sept. 1864, may be for Joseph Priestman, or not. The other, 27 Sept. 1864, may be for Edwin Minor, or not. And with the witnesses, there is not a name from which to choose as to who was there to witness for who. As said above, a mess. Tracking deaths for daughters Alice and Florence showed that their mother was Irene Greybiel. It's safe to say that this tree has this sorted out. To this it may simply be added that the Greybiel name is variously spelled. It is left as Greybiel in this tree, but later generations may have used a different spelling. Beyond that, please forgive the fact that the information shown below is limited. MS248 reel 17, Vol. 77, page 41 Welland County Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. John Baxter of the Wesleyan Methodist Church (for the year 1864). Fyled on 5 February, 1865. Joseph 'Priesman', 22, born and residing Wainfleet. Parents Joseph and Betsy. Irene Grabiel, 19, born and residing Wainfleet (apparently). Parents John and Delora. Witnesses unfathomed, but with either possibility, apparently from Humberstone. On either the 8th or 27th of September, 1864. |
Note | The 1861 census describes the family of Joseph Priestman as being Quaker. Son Joseph, however, is the exception. He is described as a Disciple (of Christ). |
