Note | Paul H. C. Bettridge, age 9, born Canada, is shown with his parents and siblings in the 1851 census at Woodstock, Oxford County. He actually appears in this census twice, for he is also enumerated at the County of Oxford Grammar School in Woodstock, as a scholar. Given the nature of the recording, it may have been a private school. By the time of the 1861 census in England, we must believe him to be the 18 year old from Woodstock, Canada, who appears in the Sunbury House Military Institute. His name is written as 'Caradoc' Bettridge (Craddock Bettridge). His parents are in London, Ontario, with his sister Julia and her husband, William Lawrason. For the following, Ancestry has a database entitled: Ireland, City and Regional Directories, 1836-1947 This includes Thom's Almanac and Directory of Ireland, and Paul H. C. Bettridge appears in the editions of 1864 and 1865. As noted in the 1861 census above, Paul was in the Sunbury House Military Institute. As of 1864, he is listed in an alphabetical list of British Army officers in Thom's Almanac, and apparently located in Ireland. He is shown as Paul H. C. Bettridge, an ensign with the 74th Regiment of Foot. Again, in 1865, Thom's again shows Paul as an ensign, though this time with the 96th Regiment of Foot. If your researcher interprets the two listings correctly, the year of his commission was 1863. A Thom's has been found for 1866, but Paul does not appear. This does of itself mean that he has mustered out of the British army, though at some point he certainly did. Paul has not been found again until the U. S. 1900 census in Santa Monica, California, where he is shown as a civil engineer. He is married to Ida. Paul died in 1907 in Los Angeles County, California, and, according to Find-a-Grave, is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica. |
