Note | Death reg. 008848-79 Strathroy, Middlesex County William Bettridge died 25 November, '79. Age 89. Rector of Woodstock. Born Ireland. Church of England. Informant W. Bettridge (by report). William Craddock Bettridge was for many years the rector at Old St. Paul's Anglican Church in Woodstock. A most thoroughgoing biography for him appears in the online Dictionary of Canadian Biography. He served in the British Army and was at Brussels at the time of the Battle of Waterloo. He became a lieutenant in 1815 and was retired on half pay in 1816. Thereafter, he may have been a bit of an adventurer. At some point he was made assistant curate at Ecclesfield near Sheffield in Yorkshire and there married Mary Hounsfield in 1823. In spring of 1834, he came out to Upper Canada with Admiral Henry Van Sittart and in 1836 became rector of the parish which position he held until his death in 1879. We may note that while the Dictionary of Canadian Biography has William's birth in Warwickshire, his place of birth as shown on his death registration is Ireland. |
