Note | A certain amount of information is to be found for John Louis (or Lewis) Wismer, but there are problems with the available records. What we may take to be sound information is to be found in the transcription of Section 3 of Mountview Cemetery in Galt. This was done by the Waterloo-Wellington branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1985. The east side of John's gravestone tells that he died on November 6, 1949, in his 96th year. (Death registrations for 1949 have yet to be made available by the Archives of Ontario.) Buried with John is his second (so far as we know) wife, Anna Mary McCullough, who died October 17, 1920, in her 52nd year. Also commemorated on the same side of the gravestone is: Charles Dolson, grandson, 1912-1972. The west side of the gravestone commemorates Jenjnie Pearl Wismer (Dolson) 1895-1977. Beloved son Ronald V. Dolson, 1921-1983. Beloved husband John Bain, 1916-1984. First, some comment on census information. John Wismer was with his mother and step-father, Clark Johnson, as of the 1881 census in West Williams Township. A sure record for John has not been found as of the 1891 census. It is possible that he spent some time in the United States, but the 1890 U.S. census was destroyed by fire and so information from this census is not available. As of the 1901 census, John is in Galt, and he appears to have remained there for the rest of his life. Two Ontario marriage registrations for John have been found. The first: Mrge reg. 012483-93 Galt, Waterloo Co. John L. Wismer, 37, widower, farmer, Methodist. Born Middlesex County, residing Waterloo Township. Parents Abraham and Susan Wismer. Jennie Bernhard, 23, spinster, Methodist. Born Dufferin County, residing Waterloo Township. Parents John and Susan Bernhard. Witnesses Rev. A. H. Ranton, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Jane Scott, Galt. On December 25, 1893, at Galt, by Rev. J. G. Scott. This marriage registration is interesting in that it shows John to be a widower, yet we have no record of a previous marriage. Rev. Scott, at Galt, was the minister of Ainslie Street Methodist Church, for the years of 1893-1896. This was later Wesley United Church and located on Ainslie Street at Market Square, where it is still present. The second available marriage registration reads as follows: Mrge reg. 002432-01 Toronto, York Co. John Louis Wismer, 44, widower, teamster, Methodist. Born Middlesex Co., residing Galt. Parents Abraham Wismer and Susan Mott. Anna M. McCullough, 32, spinster or widow not shown, Presbyterian. Born and residing Guelph. Parents Alex'r. McCullough and Jane Allen. Witnesses Edythe Gowland and M. Gowland, both of Toronto. On Sept 4, 1901, at Toronto, by H. S. Magee. The information that follows is taken from Vernon Directories for Galt. The 1910-12 directory shows John at 41 Chalmers Street. The 1914-15 directory shows John at 47 Chalmers. Since both this and the above directory show this to be the corner of Pollock Ave., there may be an error in the 1910 directory. Alternatively, there may have been a renumbering. Typically, in these early directories, spouses are not shown. For the moment, the next available directory is that of 1930 and this still shows John at 47 Chalmers Street. He is shown as a teamster for the city. He is at the same address in 1942, but, with him, is Mrs. J. Dolson. The 1947 also shows John at 47 Chalmers, but with him is an extended Dolson family. Mrs. J. Dolson is with him in 1948. Jennie is apparently his daughter. At the time the 1949 voter's list of enumerated, John was still living and is still at 47 Chalmers Street with Mrs. Jennie Dolson, his daughter, and, apparently his grandson, Charles Dolson. John died later that year. |
