| Note | Page 194 of A Brief History of Jacob Wismer, Fretz, 1893, dates Susan's birth to September 10, 1833, in Oxford County (probably, at the time, a part of the London District.) Page 667 of Ezra Eby's Biographical History of Waterloo Township, 1896, gives the same date. It's tempting to wonder if Eby was taking his information from Fretz, though there are differences. Wherever reality may be so far as September as a birth month for Susan, she was almost certainly born later, and 1836 is the year chosen here, and doing so is not without reasonable support. Susan appears with husband Abraham in the 1851 census in Williams Township (prior to it being divided into East and West) in Middlesex County. This census was begun on January 12, 1852. The question asked with both the 1851 and 1861 censuses was: What is your age as of your next birthday? Susan shows her age as 16 and we must believe that to be as of September of 1852. Abraham's age is shown as 26. Since both Eby and Fretz claim that his birth date is in April of 1827, this is probably not exact, but will be close. As is, his gravestone tells that he died on 29 July, 1861, and shows his age as 33 years and 3 months. This would place his birth to 1829. Unless a family bible be found, we must accept a certain amount of imprecision. The 1851 census page that shows Abraham and Susan has on it Susan's parents and at least some siblings. Her parents were Lewis and Rebecca Mott, and Susan is buried with them in Sylvan Cemetery in West William Township. The 1861 census shows Susan with husband Abraham in West Williams Township. With them are four children: Rebecca, Rachel, John L., and Stilman. This census was begun on 4th January. Abraham had not long to live, for he died in July of the year. According to Fretz and Eby, Rebecca at some point died. No marriage has been found for her and she does not appear with her mother and step-father in the 1871 census. By 1871, Susan has remarried, her new husband being Clark Johnson. The three Wismer children in the household are identified as Johnsons. Also with them are three more children of whom Clark will be the father: They are Ida, Edith, and Evyline. The 1881 census, the last one wherein Susan appears, shows Clark and Susan in West Williams. With them are John Wismer, age 24, and Susan's son by her first marriage, and daughters Edith and Eveline, ages 14 and 10, but this time around it's the Johnson daughters who are dentified as Wismers. Also present in the household is a female child, age 5, Cammile Wismer. Considering that Edith and Eveline are misidentified as Wismers, this error probably applies to Cammile as well. This has yet to be further researched. Death reg. 010157-87 West Williams Twp., Middlesex Co. Susan Johnson died 11 Dec 1887. Age 51 years, 3 months. Born Norwich, Oxford County. Baptist. Cause of death cancer and dropsy. Physician and informant Wm. Caw, M.D., filed by the doctor on December 15th. December 11th 1887 may be the correct date of Susan's death. Her gravestone shows her death date to be 12th December. A transcription of Sylvan Cemetery shows her age to be 51 years and 8 months, but a careful examination of the photograph of the gravestone on Find-a-Grave shows her age to agree with her death registration, namely 51 years and 3 months. This would allow for a birth month of September and place her birth year in 1836, and this will at least be close - perhaps entirely correct. (Apologies: My earlier entry showing Susan's birth year as 1826 was mistyped.) Susan is buried with her parents, Lewis and Rebecca Mott, in Sylvan United Church Cemetery, West Williams. |
