Waterloo County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Robert Acheson, a minister of the UP Church, Galt, for the year ending 31st December, 1867

Thomas Lockie, 28, born and residing Dumfries. Parents John (Lockie) and Jane Milroy.
Jane Wight, 28, Born Scotland, residing Beverly. Parents Adam (Wight) and Ellen Elliott.
Witness John Lockie of Dumfries.
On 1st October, 1867.

As the marriage was returned to the county clerk for Waterloo, we might expect that the marriage was performed in Waterloo County. Since the county marriage registers do not typically name the locale of the marriage, this would not be unreasonable. The Lockie family resided in North Dumfries and so we might expect the marriage to be in North Dumfries Township, or in the village of Galt.

The clue here is that Jane resides in Beverly Township, which is in Wentworth County. Substantial portions of the township are not so far from Galt and in any event border North and South Dumfries.

Rev. Acheson seemed to follow his predecessor, Rev. James Strang, in returning all his marriages to the county wherein he resided, whether they were performed in that county or not.

As it happenened, however, the Dumfries Reformer edition of 16 October, 1867, had a marriage notice to the effect that Thomas Lockie and Jane Wight were married at the home of the father of the bride and specifically states that this was in Beverly.

The one inconsistency is that the Reformer notice dates the marriage to 2nd October; the marriage registration shows it to be the 1st of October. We will stick with the date as it appears in the marriage registration.

DeathHe died on 14 April 1890.
BurialHe was buried at Sec. 4, Mountview Cemetery, Galt.
NoteA death registration for Thomas Lockie has not been found. The Waterloo branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides a transcription of Mountview Cemetery's section 4, and this shows what is essentially a Lockie plot. Thomas is buried with his wife Jane and his date of death is shown as 14 April, 1890. Find-a-Grave also shows a photograph of Thomas and Jane's gravestone. The OGS transcription has Jane's maiden name spelled as Wright, but the Find-a-Grave photograph shows that her name was correctly inscribed as Wight.

This agrees with their marriage information as well as her maiden name as inscribed on the birth registrations of their children.
