Note | Adam Wight is probably the Adam Wight, son of John Wight, who was baptized at Southdean, Roxburgh, on 20 May, 1804, though confirming evidence is lacking. (This is to be found under Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950.) Two marriages are to be found for an Adam Wight and a Helen Elliot, one in Jedburgh and the other in Selkirk, and both in April of 1834. Either are possible, but both seem a bit early considering the earliest birth of a child that we may find for them is John, born in 1838. Making comparisons with the family as they appear in the 1871 census in Beverly Township of Wentworth County in Ontario (their family name is shown as Wait), we may identify the family in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses at Wilton, Roxburghshire, Scotland. In the 1841 census we find Adam Weight, age shown as 40, with Helen Weight, age shown as 30, with son John, age 2. In 1851, the family is still in Wilton, Roxburghshire. Adam Wight is shown as 45 and Helen as 36. Her place of birth is shown as Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. With them are children John, age 12, and born in Wilton; Jane, age 9, born Wilton; and Mary, age 3, also born Wilton. It seems likely that there one or two children who did not survive, but no evidence has been found to confirm this. It is possible to say that the children recorded in the 1851 census in Scotland came with them to Canada. The family has not been found in Scotland as of the 1861 census. An Adam Wight is found in Puslinch Township of Wellington County in the agricultural census for Enumeration District 5. He is shown on the 1st concession, north half of lot 10, but available abstract index pages of land transcriptions do not cover the 1861 era that would confirm this. The pages available for viewing on Ancestry that cover the every person census have been checked, but the family is not found. Adam and his family, as mentioned, is shown with the family name Wait in the 1871 census in Beverly Township of Wentworth County. Here, landwise, we have a bit more success, for the Abstract Index as found via onland.ca shows that Adam purchased the north half (100 acres) of lot 3 on the 9th concession in January of 1863 for 1850 dollars. The purchase was from an Archibald Henderson, who just possibly may more accurately have been an Archibald Fergusson, and who may have been one of the executors of an earlier owner, Daniel Haggert. Adam is shown as then taking out a mortgage with the executors for 1310 dollars, which he later cleared. (Information for this later release of the mortage has not been found, other than that it is mentioned on the available abstract.) Note that such birth and baptism information that we have for the children of Adam and Helen is taken from a database entitled: Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, and this is found on Ancestry, though the FHL film numbers given indicate that the original information comes from Familysearch. One other item of note is that where the family was located in Beverly was not far from the town of Galt. The family was Presbyterian and from the odd record found it's evident that they went to First Church in Galt, at the time Presbyterian, though in later years a United Church. Death reg. 019299-85 Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co. Adam Wight died May 28th, 1885. Age 81. Farmer. Born Scotland. Presbyterian. Cause of death heart failure six months. Physician Dr. Lundy. Informant Robt. Fergusson, farmer, Beverly. Adam's death and that of his son John who died on June 11th of the same year, are recorded side by side on the Beverly return. Both were filed by Robert Fergusson on the same date, June 30th. In the comments field below and straddling both records, Wallace McDonald, the township clerk, simply notes that they were father and son. John is buried in Mountview Cemetery, Galt, with his parents. |
