James Watson

ID # 7760, (1794-1885)
BirthJames Watson was born in April 1794 at Scotland.
MarriageHe married Jean Tweedie on 1 November 1822 at Muirkirk, Ayr, Scotland.
The 1861 census in Peel Township, Wellington County, shows James and Jane Watson and tells that they were married in 1822. Add to that, the gravestone for the firstborn of James and Jane, William Watson, which is to be found in Hollen Cemetery, Maryborough Twp., Wellington County, shows him as a native of Muirkirk, Ayr, Scotland, as does his baptism information.

Another marriage record exists for a James Watson and Jean Tweedie in Douglas, Lanark, Scotland, dated October of the same year, but with the Muirhead connection reasonably well recorded this seems to be the correct marriage record, which is a transcription as provided by Familysearch:

NoteThe family of James Watson is in Whitby Township as of the 1851 cesus. The entire family, including young Elizabeth Watson, age 8, are all shown as being born in Scotland. By the time of the 1861 census, the family is in Peel Township of Wellington County. The census page tells that James and Jean were married in 1822.

There will be more to say about their children, but an excellent background for the family may be found in the Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario. Toronto: Historical Atlas Publishing Co., 1906. This, at least for the present, may be downloaded in its entirety from Canadiana.ca and provides useful biographies for a goodly number of Wellington County families. The download is large and excerpts from this may be found on Wellington GenWeb, including that of the James Watson family.

The Watson family biography tells that the family came from Lanarkshire, Scotland, to Canada in 1844. They first settled in Whitby Township and rented a farm but then came to Peel Township in Wellington County and purchased the whole 200 acres of lot 12 on concession 6. A list of the couple's children is also provided. The family researcher should find it a worthy read.
