Marriage 32
Benjain Craddock of this parish ....(illeg) weaver, and Sara Wilson of this parish, spinster, were married in this church by banns this 23rd day of January, 1810, by me Jos. Bushley, curate.
Signed by the couple (or at least entered in the book as though signed by the couple. Apparently on the original, Sarah signed with an X, but not Benjamin.
Witnesses Ralph Robson (with an X) and Joseph Smales.

See notes for Benjamin.

NoteThis tree shows Benjamin and Sarah Wilson as the parents of daughter Phillis as well as the later children shown. This might seem arguable, but it should be noted that Phillis, born 30 December, 1809, was baptized in St. Peter's on 23 January, 1810. Benjamin and Sarah were married on 23 January, 1810, by banns - which meant that these were likely read in the church, quite possibly three times prior to the marriage

Daughter Phillis was born 30 December, 1809, and she was baptized in St. Peter's the same day her parents were married. The baptism only shows her father's name, but note that Phillis Craddock and her husband William Milnes had a son Benjamin Craddock Milnes and a daughter Sarah. None of which is direct proof, but with the marriage and baptism on the same day your researcher thinks it reasonable to show Phillis as the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah. Certainly, and considering this was all done in the same church, there are no reasonable alternatives.

Contrary arguments are always welcome, but something resembling evidence should accompany.

Benjamin Craddock, weaver, and wife Sarah, are both in Kirkgate, Leeds, as of the 1841 census. They are both shown as age 50 and no children are with them. Sarah is shown as being born in Leeds, but Benjamin is not. There is some possibility that he was born in County Durham, but more evidence is needed.

Sarah Craddock, age 61 is still living in Leeds as of the 1851 census. Interestingly, she is shown as a weaver, but on parish support. Benjamin is not present. The FreeBMD index records the death of a Benjamin Craddock of Leeds in the 4th quarter of 1846. This is probably Benjamin, the husband of Sarah.
