NotePage 284 of Warner & Beers History of the County of Brant has a short history of the Brant Canning Company. This was essentially a Shuttleworth family operation. It was begun by J. R. Shuttleworth, but came to include his brother Joseph and George. The history tells of Joseph spending time in Liverpool, England, where he worked on the import/export side of the business, but brother George also spent quite some years there and George's daughter Beatrice was born in Liverpool.

The Shuttleworth's family history appears on page 535 of the same book. This gives James' date of birth as 7 August, 1848.
