NoteSee the History of the County of Brant, Ontario, Warner, Beers & Co., 1883, page 535. This has a biography of Joseph Shuttleworth. His gravestone in Greenwood Cemetery, Brantford, shows his year of death as 1867, but the biography dates this to 24 December, 1867, and tells that he died in Brantford.

He is said to have been born in Lancashire, England, in 1807, and that he came to Canada in 1830, settling in Brantford. His business interests included distilling and baking, but he was also a butcher for a number of years. For a time he moved to a farm, but returned to Brantford where he died.

The biography also includes extensive information about his sons and their grocery and export fruit interests.

A James and Eliza Shuttleworth appear in the 1851 Brantford census. James is shown as a distiller. James and Eliza have yet to be found thereafter, but some of their children remained in the area. James is nearly the same age as Joseph and is probably a brother. It's interesting that the Warner & Beers biography for Joseph tells that he was for a time a distiller when he came to Brantford. Beyond the same surname, a definitive record linking James and Joseph has not been found.
