| Note | Elizabeth first appears in the 1851 census at Ancaster Township. The next record found appears in Rev. Donald McKenzie's Vol. 4, Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian 1861-1870, Global Heritage Press, Milton (now Ottawa). This tells that she was the youngest child of Enoch and Drusilla Howell and grand daughter of Garret Howell, the father of Methodism in the Jersey Settlement. Her date of birth is given as December 8, 1845, in Ancaster, and her date of death as November 1st, 1861, in Burford. It tells that at the time of her death she was preparing to go before the Board of Education for a teaching certificate. We will note here that Elizabeth Howell, daughter of Enoch and Drusilla, appears in the Wesleyan Methodist Baptisms and this shows her to have been born in Onondaga Township. This is the more likely to be correct. She was not an infant when she was baptized, for she was baptized with her brother William in 1858 at Burford, probably the township. Her parents are said to be resident in Burford at the tme. (See baptism information for brother William.) The obituary states that she was buried in the churchyard at Fairfield, but a transcription of Fairfield Cemetery, indeed all the Burford cemeteries, is to hand and if the obituary is correct, her stone has not survived. The above information was found by Rev. McKenzie in the January 8th, 1862, edition of the Christian Guardian, page 7. |
