Note | Why John Knox might have shown Edinburgh, Scotland, as his place of birth on his marriage registration is anyone's guess. He does correctly name his parents, Joseph and Catharine, and we may trace the family back to Bristol Township in Quebec in 1847 as shown on John's Wesleyan Methodist Baptism. This dates his birth to August 3rd, 1847, in Bristol, and his baptism to May 3rd, 1848. The baptism record clearly shows his parents as Joseph and Catharine Knox. The 1851 census would have the family as being Church of England; the 1861 census shows Joseph as Church of Scotland, but wife Catharine and all the children as Wesleyan Methodist. At best, we must believe the religious information as it appears in the 1851 census to be questionable. (A record of John's baptism has not been found on the Drouin website as presented by Ancestry. It has, however, been found in the Wesleyan Methodist baptisms. The image for this may be found on Bower-McBurney Genealogy. This excellent site carries the Wesleyan Methodist baptism images. John's baptism is to be found at: http://bowergenealogy.ca/resources/methodist/2/664.jpg The 1851 census shows John, age 5, in Bristol Township, Ottawa County, Quebec, with his parents and siblings. By 1861, Bristol is shown as being in Pontiac County. At the time of the 1871 census, John, age 23, still with his parents in Bristol, is shown as a plasterer. He was shown as a plasterer in his marriage registration when he married Rebecca Watson in 1876. John's trade got him around, for at the time of his marriage he was resident in Guelph. Son George was born in Nassagaweya in 1876; daughter Ida was born in Renfrew Village, Renfrew County, in Eastern Ontario, in 1878. By 1880 the family was in the Dakota Territory. |
