| Note | Some marriage registrations, from the County Marriage Registration era (1858 approx.) onward would show the maiden names of mothers. None such so far for the children of Robert Husband and Susannah have been found. Death registrations from around 1912 onwards might shows a mother's maiden name, but one found for a child of Susannah's is that of Margaret who married John Garbutt. Margaret died in 1912 and rather amazingly for an early date for the type of death registration, her mother's maiden name is shown as Susan Aitkens. Now also found is the death registration of son Robert James Husband in Burlington in 1921. This shows his mother's full name as Susannah Elizabeth Aikens. Looking over early Halton names, this latter spelling, Aikens, is probably closer to accurate. The following needs more research, but: It is belived that Robert and Susannah spent their early years in Nassagaweya Township, though they are certainly in Nelson Township by the time of the 1851 census. Daughter Margaret's marriage registration shows her place of birth, approx. 1828, as Nassagaweya. It may have been the residence of Susannah's Aitkens/Akins family as well for there are several Akins in Ebenezer Cemetery, Nassagaweya. They are probably the same family. On October 11, 1832, Robert Husband received a Crown Patent for 50 acres of lot 24 on the 5th Concession of Nassagaweya. (This he sold a month later.) This is too early a date for the property to have been granted to Robert Husband, the son of brother Henry. Interestingly, on the same date a Hugh Ekins received a patent for another 50 acres on the same township lot. Ekins/Akins/Aitkens? This remains to be sorted out. (The above information is shown on the Abstract Index for this lot. The microfilm work is digitized and available on Familysearch.) As noted, Robert sold his 50 acres a month after purchase. Hugh Ekins sold to the same person the same day. Robert and Hugh may have been at some level, or for at least a time, business partners. Robert and Susannah are buried in Salem Cemetery in Nelson Township. Buried with them is John Garbutt, apparently daughter Margaret's husband, who died young (age 49 in 1874). When Margaret is buried has yet to be found. Birth and death registrations were required in Ontario from July 1st, 1869, though it was some time before the requirement was observed. daughter Margaret died in August of 1869, but a death registration for her has not been found. In any event, for the era, this would not have stated the place of burial. Note: There is a Hugh Akins buried in Ebenezer Church Cemetery in Nassagaweya. He was 76 when he died in 1902. This would place his birth to approximately 1826. He would have been too young to be the Hugh 'Ekins' who purchased the quarter lot in 1832. He was probably a family connection, however. A further note, and feel free to disregard - just a bit of a notion, but Susannah's maiden name may have been closer to Eakens. Just a thought for further research. Currently, no proof exists whatsoever. |
