Note | Going by marriage registration and census information, particularly the 1851 and 1861 censuses in Nelson Township in Halton County, it is possible to create something of a list of the children of Robert and Susannah. 8 have been found - 3 girls and 5 boys. There were probably more. Robert Husband's death in 1867 was prior to the advent of death registrations. However, the newspaper The Canadian Champion at Milton, edition of December 26, 1867, carries a death notice that states that Robert died at his residence in Nelson on the Sabbath, the 15th inst. (December 15th) and that he was formerly of Limerick, Ireland. Whether he was born there or resided there prior to his departure to Canada isn't said. A note here as to Robert and Susannah's presence in what became Halton County. The diary of Henry Husband tells that his Uncle Robert spent some time in Nassagaweya Township, but then moved to Nelson Township. Land records via Abstract Index information tell us a bit more. The abstract index for lot 24 of the 5th concession of Nassagaweya tells us that Robert gained a patent for 50 acres on 11 October 1832 and then sold the lot on 24 October 1832. He then had a patent for 100 acres on 28 February 1839 for lot 2 on the 2nd concession of Nelson Township north of Dundas Street. This was a half lot. (Eli Teeple, shortly after, had a patent for the other half of this lot.) Robert's daughter Margaret is said to be born in Nassagaweya in 1828. Entirely possible. Son George is said to be born in Nelson in 1835. Possible, but rather unlikely. We have no information for daughter Hannah, but since she was born in 1839 it's possible she was born in Nelson. Information for Hugh tells us that he was born in Nelson and this is quite likely. One further comment. As noted above, land records place Robert in Nassagaweya in 1832 and in Nelson in 1839. There is a further record, however. For this see page 76, Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829, Elliott, Walker, and Stratford-Devai, published by the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1995. An 1828 list of men in the 5th Gore Regiment shows a Robert Husband. Given the available information, this can only be Robert who was in Nassagaweya and later in Nelson. According to the information shown, the 5th Gore Regiment was drawn on men between the ages of 19 and 39 and who were resident in Esquesing, Nassagaweya, Erin, Eramosa, and Garafraxa. This does not necessarily limit Robert's presence in the Gore District to Nassagaweya, but that is probably where he was located prior to obtaining land. Also listed, four persons after Robert, was William Trudgeon. This was probably William Trudgeon Jr. As mentioned above, Robert's patent in Nassagaweya was for a quarter portion of lot 24 in the 5th concession. In 1824, William Trudgeon Sr. had a patent for a half of lot 22 on the 3rd concession; William Jr. had a patent for the other half of the lot in 1826. Henry Husband in his diary mentions the Trudgeons as an old Nassagaweya family. There may be more of a Husband connection to the Trudgeons than is obvious at first glance. |
