On Dec 7, 1886, at Trinity Church, Galt, by Rev. E. M. Bland.

Under OGS publication nbr. 207, the Brantford branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society transcribed some marriage records from Trinity Anglican Church in Galt, year of transcription not given. This has some problems that may be related to the clergyman's handwriting, but also has some expanded and informative material.

'Nanton' was apparently the correct surname of the groom, though the transcription shows it as Minton. This may be disregarded. It does tell us that the groom's middle name was Meredith and that the bride's middle name was Hope. The groom's mother's middle name was Louisa. The priest-in-charge was Edward M. Bland, assisted by Jno. Ridley.

Two witnesses are shown on the registration and four are shown on the church's record. These are:

H. W. Nanton, Montreal; Laura F. M. Walker, London; G. W. Nunn and M. McTavish, residences not given, but probably local.

Laura Florence Mary Walker appears elsewhere in this tree and was a cousin of the bride. The clergyman's last name is shown as Mand, but Bland is correct. He was married to a cousin of the bride and he appears in this tree.

MarriageHe married Ethel Constance Clark on 17 November 1894 at Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The date of marriage, 17th November, 1894, for Augustus and Ethel is taken from a biography of Augustus Nanton as found on the website of Library and Archives Canada. This is confirmed by a index of marriages as made available by the Manitoba Vital Statistics website. As viewed, this is an index-only.

BurialHe was buried on 28 April 1925 at St. John's Anglican Cathedral Cemetery, Winnipeg.

Page 21 (1st page of the 2nd section) of the Toronto Daily Star, edition of Friday, April 24, 1925, records the passing of Augustus Nanton with an extensive obituary. It tells of his work in the Canadian west as well as his patriotic work during the Great War, for which, in 1917, he was knighted by King George V. It tells that Augustus married twice, first to Georgina Hespeler who died in 1887, and then to Miss Ethel Constance Clark who survived him.

Page 1 of the Saturday, April 25, edition of the same paper relates that just after 2pm, his remains were taken to St. Simon's (Anglican) Church where the funeral service was conducted. The funeral party then departed on a special train that left Yong Street station at 5:30 destined Winnipeg where he was to be buried.

A photograph of Sir Augustus' gravestone has not been found, though the website of St. John's Anglican Cathedral in Winnipeg does show a history of the cemetery which records that he is indeed buried there.
