Herbert Marshall Farr

ID # 6942, (1841-1900)
BaptismHerbert Marshall Farr was baptized in May 1841 at Chesterfield, New Hampshire.
MarriageHe married Anna Hespeler, daughter of Jacob Hespeler and Elise (Lissie) Knoth, on 1 June 1864 at Hespeler, Waterloo Co., Canada West.
The marriage of Herbert Marshall Farr and Anna Hespeler does not appear to have been returned to the county clerk for entry into the county marriage register by the clergyman, Rev. E. R. Stimson. Instead, we find a transcription of the Dumfries Reformer. This work was done by Rosemary Ambrose and at least one time available via the Waterloo Wellington branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.

This refers to a marriage notice that appeared in the June 8th, 1864, edition of the paper. It tells that Herbert Marshall Farr of Hamilton, the only son of the late Marshall H. Farr, was married at Hespeler on June 1st, 1864, to Anna Hespeler, the 2nd daughter of Jacob Hespeler. The clergyman was Rev. E. R. Stimson.

Glanville Heritage presents a collection of birth, marriage and death notices from the Hamilton Spectator. This also shows that which is presented above in the Dumfries Reformer. The marriage notice, which appears in the Spectator's edition of June 3, 1864, only adds that the marriage was held at the 'mansion of the bride's father in the village of Hespeler'.

DeathHe died on 20 November 1900 at Holyoke, Massachusetts, at age 59.
BurialHe was buried at Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke, Hampden Co., Mass..
NoteThe 1850 U.S. census shows Herbert in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, with his parents.

The Canadian 1861 census shows Herbert in Hamilton, Wentworth County, with his mother and two siblings. An explanation of this involves a tale of tragedy.

Just when the Farr family came to Canada isn't clear, but Herbert's father died in the disaster wherein a train crashed through a bridge and into the Desjardins Canal in March of 1857. This is recorded on the gravestone of Marshall and Diana Farr in Hamilton Cemetery. The Hamilton Public Library has online a story of the disaster. The Hamilton Spectator has some notices of deaths as provided by Glanbrook Heritage. This tells that Marshall H. Farr was a railway contractor who built stations houses on the Great Western and Grand Trunk Railways. For all that has been written of the even, the exact location of the disaster is unclear. There are remnants of the canal in Dundas, which is adjacent to Hamilton. There was probably more to the canal that your researcher has any recall, certainly so far as the terrain is concerned.

Census information shows Herbert and Anna as being in Hespeler, Waterloo County, Ontario, as of the 1871 census, but by 1880 they are in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The 1900 census at Holyoke places the family in the United States as of 1875.
