NoteSee marriage notes for Mary Alma and John Lawder:

The 1851 census at Niagara Town shows the family of John Lees Alma, comprising such members as are dwelling in the parental household. With them is a child, Alma Lawder, age 3. See notes for Alma Lawder.

Mary's date of birth appears on a transcription of the family gravestone in St. Andrews Presbyterian Cemetery in present-day Niagara-on-the-Lake. The date shown is January 13th, 1826. Since the date is applied parenthetically, it has the look of being taken from church records. Considering that she is shown as age six on the passenger list of the SS Brittanica in June of 1832, her date of birth is probably accurate and, in any event, won't be far off.

We may note here that an early transcription of St. Andrew's was done by Dr. W. G. Reive in his Cemeteries and Graves in Niagara. The copy to hand is a transcription done by Douglas A. Robbins of St. Catharines in 1991. Page 58 of this excellent work shows Dr.Reive's entries to be a bit terse, but he shows the years for John Marjoribanks Lawder as 1825-1893 and for Mary Catharine as 1826-1908. Reive did not list the entries for the children. Reive simply dates his visit to St. Andrew's as being in 1929.

The 1851 and 1861 censuses have John and Mary in Niagara Town. By the time of the 1871 census they are in St. Catharines.

John died in St. Catharines in 1893. By the time of the 1901 census, Mary is in Toronto West. The census page is in rather faded condition, though a copy has been found that is at least to a degree readable. It shows her place of birth as Ireland. It also shows her date of birth as August 13, 1824, and her year of coming to Canada as 1830. The gravestone will be the more accurate.
