Note | She Elma is John and Eliza's second child of the name. The first child Elma died in 1857 according to a reasonably legible inscription on a gravestone in Burford Congregational Cemetery. The second Elma was born in 1865 and appears with her parents and siblings in the 1871 census at Burford. She is still in Burford with her parents as of the 1881 census. She married Thomas McIntee in 1882 and is with Thomas and his brother William in Burford at the time of the 1891 census. Thomas died in 1899 at Burford and is buried in the Burford Congregational Cemetery. No evidence of children for Elma has been found. Elma was with her father, John McClure Keachie, in Burford at the time of the 1901 census, enumeration of which was begun on 31 March, 1901. She married Joseph Kenny Unsworth some four months later. With the 1911 census we find Joseph and 'Desire' in Vancouver. Her name is faintly written and has been indexed as Dann. Casting forward to the 1921 census, however, we find her name clearly shown as Desire. This of course was her middle name. Library & Archives Canada has a rather clearer image of the 1911 census page and that her name in this census is shown as Desire is a reasonable interpretation. Familysearch has a database (transcription only) entitled: British Columbia Death Registrations, 1872-1986; 1992-1993 Here we find: Elma Desire Unsworth death on 27 Jan 1933 at Victoria, British Columbia. Age 66. Married. Date of birth 22 Jun 1933 (a typo), birth year estimated 1867, birthplace Ontario. Father John Keachie Spouse Joseph K. Unsworth. Page 14 of the January 28th, 1933 edition of The Daily Colonist, Victoria, has a death notice for Elma. It tells that Elma Desire Unsworth died 'Friday' at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Her age is shown as 66 and tells that she was born in Burford. It goes on to say that there would be a 'strictly private' funeral after which her remains would be sent to Seattle for cremation. An obituary appears in the January 27th, 1933 edition of the Victoria Times. This states all of the above and adds a history of the pastorates where she and her husband served what was by this time the United Church of Canada. Where Elma's remains were placed has not been found. |
