Agnes Moscrip
ID # 6739, (1826-1898)
Father | Thomas Hall Moscrip (1787-1840) |
Mother | Agnes (--?--) (1784-1867) |
Birth | Agnes Moscrip was born on 19 August 1826 at Putnam Co., New York. |
Marriage | She married John Jamieson on 18 November 1847 at Gore District. MS248 reel 1, Vol. 4, page 74 Gore District Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. David Caw, minister of Dumfries Street Presbyterian Church at Paris, Gore District, for the year 1847. John Jamieson and Agnes Moscrip, both of Dumfries (Township). The above registration provides us with no further information. Names of witnesses are not provided; it does not state as to whether the marriage was by banns or license. And as usual with district or county marriages, the exact place of marriage is not stated. It may have been held at the church at Paris or a family member's residence. The name of the clergyman's surname seems to be of some debate. It is ill written at the bottom of the list of marriages performed. One interpretation, entered on the page in pencil, would have his name as Caird. The transcription done by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai, Gore District 1854-1856, Global Heritage Press, 2000, shows his name as Caw. This is correct, for David Caw died in 1864 and is buried in Old Paris Cemetery. The transcription of his gravestone tells that he was minister of Dumfries Street Presbyterian Church at Paris and that he died in 1864. |
Death | She died on 6 June 1898 at Cato Twp., Montcalm Co., Michigan, at age 71. |
Burial | She was buried on 8 June 1898 at Lakeview Cemetery. |
Note | The marriage registration along does not identify Agnes Moscrip, wife of John Jamieson, as the daughter of Thomas and Agnes Moscrip, but the 1851 census in North Dumfries shows Agnes' mother, Agnes Moscrip, living with John and Agnes, and they are living next to Agnes' brother Andrew. John and Agnes are living in Waterloo Township as of the 1861 census and the names of the two first children, John and Isabella, are the same as appear in the 1851 census. By the time of the 1870 U.S. census, John and Agnes, with seven children, are in Cato Township, Montcalm County, Michigan. They are still present in Cato at the time of the 1880 census. We may note here that the 1861 census in Waterloo Township shows Agnes as being born in the U.S.A. The 1870 and 1880 censuses in Cato Township show her as being born in New York State. The 1916 History of Montcalm County, Michigan, John W. Dasef, Vol. 2, has a biography for William C. Jamieson, the son of John and Agnes. Agnes' maiden name is shown as Agnes B. Moscrip and tells that she was born in New York State near Lake George. Agnes death registration places her birth in Putnam County, New York.
