| Note | Birth reg. 033111-97 South Easthope Twp., Perth Co. Lewis Cleveland Delgaty born Dec. 16, 1896. Parents Thomas Christian Delgaty and Elizabeth Nichols. Father's occupation tailor. Physician Dr. R. Whiteman. Informant Thomas C. Delgaty. Lewis, in his army record, shows his place of birth as Shakespeare. This village is in South Easthope Township. Lewis' name was originally spelled 'Louis'. This was corrected by 'the father' in 1906. The birth was not registered by the father until January 12, 1897, and the page was not returned to the provincial registrar until July of 1897. The Archives of Ontario has this filed under the year 1897. The other point of some interest relating to this return is that Thomas' middle name is shown as Christian. His marriage registration shows his middle name as Chisholm. A handwriting related error could account for either and for the moment we can't be sure which is correct. Considering that Thomas' mother's maiden name was Christison, then something like Christian for a middle name is entirely possible. Lewis Cleveland Delgetty joined the Canadian Army in March of 1916 and showed his then current address as Manitou, Manitoba. He does consistently show his surname as Dalgetty. His service record shows his time in Canada as 8 months, in England as 20 months, and in France as 8 months. He was awarded a good conduct medal in July of 1918, and suffered a gunshot wound to his forearm in October of 1918. The bullet broke a bone and his records show that his injuries took some time to heal. There is some evidence in his record that he may at a later date have gone to Saskatchewan. Some soldiers' forms will show a date of death in much later years. One of Lewis' forms shows, written across it in red ink, deceased 2-17-57. The year '57' is open to some interpretation. |
