Mary Alice Sheppard born October 16, 1879. Parents Henry M. Sheppard, farmer, and Honora Sullivan. Physician Dr. Smith. Informant Henry M. Sheppard.

(Either the second name Alice is a misinterpretation of handwriting, or the child's name was changed at the time of baptism. Her name was obviously Mary Della Sheppard.)

The 1881 census shows her as Della. The 1901 census shows her as Mary D. born 16 October 1879.

A transcription of St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery at Niagara-on-the-Lake shows her date of death to have been March 14, 1908, and she is buried in the family plot in this cemetery. There is some possibility that Della's remains were returned to Niagara-on-the-Lake from a distance for the burial information provided by the Morse & Son index shows her burial as of March 24, 1908. This is probably not an error.

Further research shows the above to be in fact the case. Familysearch provides a transcription of a death registration in a database entitled:

British Columbia Death Registrations, 1872-1986; 1992-1993

This tells that Della Sheppard, age 28, birthplace, Niagara, Ontario, died 14 March, 1908, at Nelson, British Columbia. There is always a possibility in such a situation that the burial was near the place of death and the inscription on the family stone was of a commorative nature. We may disregard this notion for reason of Morse & Son Funeral Home of Niagara Falls being involved.

The above does not explain Della's presence in British Columbia at the time of her death, but an examination of the 1911 census in Nelson B.C. shows Edward Sheppard, born January, 1876, in Ontario. This will be Della's brother, Henry Edward Sheppard. He is shown as a civil servant.
