| Marriage | She married Lorenzo O'Dell on 30 May 1850 at Claridon, Geauga Co., Ohio. We have two documents relating to the marriage of Lorenzo O'Dell and Jerusha Exceen. Both are provided by familysearch. The first is the marriage license and the second the record of the marriage itself. The State of Ohio, Geauga County Personally appeared Frederick Exceen and made application for a marriage license for Lorenzo O'Dell and Jerusha Exceen, of the township of Claridon in said county and made solemn oath that the said Lorenzo is of the age of twenty one years and that the said Jerusha is of the age of sixteen years, that they are both single and not nearer kin than first cousins and that he knows no legal impediment against their being joined in marriage and that the said Jerusha is his daughter and he gives his consent to the marriage Signed Frederick Exceen, 13th day of May, 1850. And Be it remembered that on the thirtieth day of May, 1850, Lorenzo O'Dell and Jerusha Exceen of the county of Geauga were legally joined in marriage by competent authority etc. an a certificate of the said marriage signed by Almon Nicholas JP who solemnized the same has been filed in the office of the Court of Common Pleas for the county of Geauga this fourth day of June 1850. An index suggests that the marriage was actually held on the 13th of May, but the handwriting is such that the thirtieth of May is the more likely. |

| Note | Jerusha Gertrude Exceen and Lorenzo O'Dell were married in May of 1850. In July of 1850, the household of Fred Exceen was enumerated. Fred, age 45, is shown as born in Canada. His wife Mary is shown as age 35 is shown as being born in New York. The first two children then in residence with their parents are shown as being born in Canada. The younger children, born in Ohio, whose ages are sufficiently younger than the older children, may be the result of a second marriage. The only record found showing Lorenzo and Jerusha together is the 1860 census as it was enumerated on the 2nd of August at Antwerp Township, VanBuren County, in Michigan. With them is daughter Stella age 2 born Michigan. Lorenzo is shown as being born in Ohio and Jerusha was born in Canada. Lorenzo is 35 and Jerusha is 24. At first glance, it might seem a stretch that Jerusha in Ohio and Michigan is Gertrude in later years in Canada, but daughter Estella's marriage to James Winter does clarify this. Also, we have Gertrude's death registration as follows: Death reg. 010358-95 Strathroy, Middlesex Co. J. Gertrude Bettridge died July 7, 1895. Age 61. Born Ontario. Church of England. Physician Dr. Alex Thompson. Informant H. Nichols...illeg. The implication of the above is that Gertrude had a first given name beginning with J and was probably Jerusha. An earlier census renders her first name as Louisa, but this was probably an enumerator's error. At a guess, Lorenzo and Jerusha Gertrude had other children, who, by the time of the 1860 Michigan census, had not survived. A death registration for Lorenzo has not been found and there is some census evidence that he lived on after Gertrude married William Bettridge. If so, this would imply a divorce, almost certainly while Gertrude was still in the United States. There is no proof that such was the case, however. |
