Marsena Cook

ID # 6380, (1809-)
FatherHaggai Cook (1773-1848)
MotherSarah Durham (1777-1813)
BirthMarsena Cook was born in 1809.
MarriageHe married Jane Eliza Person in January 1836 at Niagara District.
A marriage license was issued to Marsena Cook and Jane Person at Queenston by Robert Grant, J.P. The date of the license is January 13, 1836. This is per a transcription by Dan Walker & Dawne Stratford-Devai and published by Global Heritage Press, 2013. The publication is entitled Vital Records of Upper Canada/Canada West, Volume 1: Part 1, Niagara District, 1795-1856.

This does not tell us the exact date of the marriage, but the marriage was probably held in the same month. We do not know where the marriage was performed.

BurialHe was buried on 17 June 1848 at Drummond Hill Cemetery, Stamford Township.
NoteMarsena Cook and his wife, Jane Eliza Person, are buried in Drummond Hill Cemetery, section 1, plot 0370. Marsena is in grave 2 S (south) and Jane Eliza is in grave C (central).

(Drummond Hill Cemetery is at the intersection of Lundy's Lane and Drummond Road in the present day city of Niagara Falls, Ontario. Just south of the intersection is a dead end street, Buchner Place. This leads to a small parking lot for the cemetery. Historically, the cemetery was once within the village of Drummondville. There was a cemetery here in very early days, prior to the War of 1812, and it was in and around this cemetery that the Battle of Lundy's Lane was fought in 1814.)

Niagara Falls Cemeteries provides no transcription for Jane Eliza's gravestone, but the photo provided does tell that she is:

Jane Eliza / wife of Marsena Cook / Died Feb. 24, 1840 / Aged 20 years

The last phrase isn't entirely clear.

The photograph provided by Niagara Falls Cemeteries of the gravestone of Marsena Cook has little more readable than his name.

We have one more aid.

In October of 1991, Douglas A. Robbins of St. Catharines, Ontario published his transcription of Burial Records and Notations of William Dalton, 1846 - 1916. William Dalton was sexton at Drummond Hill Cemetery.

Actually the records the early years of 1845 - October of 1876 were those of Emmanual Pidgeon. William Dalton obtained the notes from Mrs. Pidgeon and copied them. They are not complete and there are missing years. Pidgeon's record begins in 1845 and so is no help with the record for Eliza Jane. He does record, however, what is probably the burial date for Marsena Cook on June 17th, 1848.

The Morse Funeral Home records' index, as provided by the Niagara branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, do show an order by Marsena Cook dated 6 March, 1841. These is no explanation for this order. The next relevant order to be found is that of the Estate of Marsena Cook and this is dated 16 June, 1848, the day before Marsena's burial.

Update: See Dr. W. G. Reive Collection Cemeteries and Graves in Niagara, Douglas A. Robbins, St. Catharines, February, 1991, page 262. This page covers gravestone information for persons of the name of Cook as he was able to transcribe them. According to the preamble to this cemetery, Reive visited Drummond Hill Cemetery in August and September of 1929. He includes information for the stones of Marsena and Eliza Jane Cook. He does not provide an exact transcription, but rather infers dates of birth. He shows dates for Marsena as 1809-1848 and for Eliza Jane as 1814-1840. Given the then absence of a goodly part of the weathering to these stones over the past 90 years, we will accept Reive's information.

And a further update.

For this, see Vol. 1, Death Notices from the Christian Guardian, 1836-1850, Rev. Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, 2011, page 74. This tells that Marsena Cook, son of Haggai Cook of Stamford was thrown from a wagon loaded with lumber and crushed under the wheels 'last Thursday'. The edition of the Guardian was June 28, 1848. It was in turn quoting an undated edition of the Niagara Chronicle. If the article is correct, Marsena probably didn't die on the 17th of June, but it will have been close.
