Note | The household of George Travis and his wife Francis Mottram is first found in Canada as of the 1861 census. This appears on a Library & Archives Canada microfilm reel (or reels - there are several) the main heading of which is 'York'. Looking at the list of townships represented by 'York', this is as presented by Ancestry probably an amalgam of at least more than one reel. The image showing the Travis family is presented by Ancestry is 3865. This is one of 9549 images presented. This is other than the city of Toronto, but obviously a part of present day Toronto. The images cover Etobicoke, Scarborough, and in the case of the Travis family, St. Lawrence Ward, nbr. 4, Kingston Road. In early days, Kingston Road was not in the city of Toronto. Kingston Road very roughly follows the Lake Ontario shoreline and was to the east of the early city of Toronto. Today, much of it is in the old borough of Scarborough, and now all part of present day Toronto. An interesting aspect of the St. Lawrence Ward enumeration is that only one household appears on a page. This can be found with other large communities. In 1861, George and Francis, ages 38 and 42, are with a Hannah Travis, age 48, perhaps George's sister. Also present are children Thomas Creswell Travis, age 13, and Frances Amelia Travis, age 4. Contrary to later census information, all are shown as being born in England. Also in the household is an Edward Morton, age 46, born in Canada West. George and Edward are laborers. Later census information indicates that daughter Frances Amelia was born in Canada. An 1851 census page has been found that appears to locate the family in Stockport, Cheshire, England. Not all of this is easy to read, but George was apparently born in Oldham, Lancashire, and Frances in Ashton, Lancs. With them, age 1, is Thomas C. Travis, born in Cheshire. We may mention here that both Oldham and Ashton are close to, or within, the city of Manchester, the district wherein George and Frances are said to have been married. The 1871 census shows George and Francis in West Toronto. Son Thomas C. is shown as an engineer - he apparently worked on the railroad, and Frances A., age 13. Death reg. 017619-77 Toronto, York Co. George Travis died 14th January, 1877, age 55. Tradesman. Church of England. Born Oldham, England. Physician and informant N. T. Aikens, M.D., Toronto. |
