NoteElizabeth Stevens was a widow when she married William Van Every. See her petition of 1794, Library & Archives Canada's microfilm C-2842 beginning image 1136. She does not show her maiden name, but identifies herself as Elizabeth Van Every. She states that her former husband was Frederick Dochsteder of Butler's Rangers and who died in an expedition against the enemy in 1781. She tells that he was a lieutenant in the corps and that upon his death she was left a widow with one child, still alive.

Her maiden name does appear on a petition made by William in 1796. For this, see C-2842, image 1262, Vol. 514, Bundle U-V 2, petition 31. Here she is identified as the daughter of John Stevens.

Elizabeth's daugher by her marriage to Frederick Dochsteder was Catharine, or Katherine. She married John Decow of Thorold. They may have been in Southwold Township of Elgin County in later years. Land claim correspondence for Catharine is extensive. Since Frederich had died a lieutenant in 1781, his widow received 1200 acres. The Decows evidently felt that a portion of this land should have come to Catharine. Catharine did receive 200 acres as the daughter of a Loyalist.

The date of Elizabeth's death was apparently ot legible on her gravestone in Warner Cemetery at the time of the transcription. A date of death, apparently provided by a 3rd party, was entered as Sept. 6, 1851. See page 308 of William Reid's The Loyalists in Ontario, Hunterdon House, 1973. This shows a death date for Elizabeth of 1857.
