| Note | At Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) on July 2nd, 1794, Peter Van Every and John Purbus (Purvis) jointly petition Governor John Graves Simcoe for land grants. They are specific. John Purbus requests lots 2 on the 1st and 2nd concessions of Flamborough. This would amount to 400 acres. Peter Van Every requests lots 9 on the 1st and 2nd concessions of Flamborough and, again, this would amount to 400 acres. (See Archives Canada microfilm C-2488, image 01303.) John Purbus appears in this tree and his situation is discussed under his name. It may simply be said, however, that it took some effort on the part of his son-in-law, Andrew Van Every to get John's name on the United Empire Loyalist list and it was some years later before it happened. The cover of the above petition indicates that they received a single lot each, 200 acres, and it would seem that John received his as a settler. For the following, refer to Norman Crowder's Early Ontario Settlers, A Source Book, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1993, page 12. This is essentially a victualling list dated at Niagara on 30 November, 1783, and relates to soldiers in Captain Andrew Bradt's company. Peter Van Every is shown as a drummer, age 13. This does not tell us when Peter joined Butler's Rangers, where, or at what age. By the time he petitioned for land in 1794, we may say he was approximately 24. The cover of the petition indicates that he received one township lot. For the following, see C-2842, image 01043, Vol. 513, V Bundle, petition 4. Essentially, Peter's brother David is applying for any grant due Peter. This is supported by a letter from their brother Andrew which appears in this file. This dates Peter's death to the month of January in 1796. It refers to Peter as being of Grantham Township. He may have died there, but the file does not say so. |
