George Brothers
ID # 6224, (1803-1878)
Birth | George Brothers was born on 17 August 1803 at Wilton, Wiltshire, England. |
Christening | He was christened on 28 August 1803 at Parish of Wilton. |
Marriage | He married Mary Ann Harris, daughter of Samuel Harris, on 14 May 1850 at Warminster, Wiltshire, England. There are two documents pertinent to the marriage of George Brothers and Mary Ann Harris. The first appears in the Register Book of Banns of Marriages Published in the Parish Church of Warminster, Wiltshire and is provided by the Wiltshire Countil and Swindon Borough Council via Ancestry. This appears on page 7 and the year is 1850. This tells us that the banns of marriage were published between George Brothers and Mary Ann Harris, both of the Parish of Warminster on three Sundays. The first was April 25th, 1850, the second May 5th, and the third May 12th. The first two were read by A. Pane and the third by Henry Mak. The second document is taken from the book of marriages at the same parish, page 163, 1850 marriages, and again provided by the Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council via Ancestry. 1850 Marriage solemnized by banns in the Parish of Warminster in the County of Wilts. Married on May 14. George Brothers, age full, widower, pensioner, residing Pound St. Mary Ann Harris, age full, spinster, servant, residing Boreham St. Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England by me Henry Mak. Witnesses Natl. White and Stephen Barrett. The bride and groom both signed the form with an X. Note: That the bride's residence was Boreham Street (or Road) is to some extent a guess. The handwriting is difficult. Looking over other entries in the book, however, this seems likely. Also, the witnesses were probably not personal friends of the contracting couple. Both men show up with some regularity in the marriage book as witnesses for a number of marriages. They may have been in some manner connected to the church and therefore readily available to act as witnesses. |
Death | He died on 23 March 1878 at Adelaide Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, at age 74. |
Note | The 1851 census at Warminster in Wiltshire shows George Brothers' place of birth as Wilton, Wiltshire. Ancestry has images from a book simply entitled Book 6. The flyleaf shows baptisms from 1777 to 1812. This in turn shows a page headed Baptisms 1803. The specific parish name is given as Parish of Wilton. (The Ancestry image is nbr. 62.) This shows: George base born son of Sarah Brothers. Born August 17, 1803, baptized August 28. The marriage registration for George Brothers and Mary Ann Harris shows George as a widower. A record of his marriage to his first wife or as to what her name might have been has not been found. The other information we are given is that George is a pensioner. At a guess, this meant that he served in the British Army and that perhaps for reasons of health or infirmity he was granted a pension. This would typically mean that he was referred to as a Chelsea Pensioner. This certainly appears to be the case, for a list of Chelsea pensioners shows a George Brothers mustering out in July of 1846 and this shows his residence as Trowbridge. Trowbridge is in Wiltshire and not very far from Warminster where he married Mary Ann Harris. The 1851 census for England shows George and Mary Ann in Warminster and on this document George is shown as a 'pensioner Chelsea'. With them as this point in time is daughter Sarah. By 1861, the family is in Adelaide Township, Middlesex County, Canada West. By this time, Mary Ann is 50 and they have with them three children, the youngest being age 6 and all born in England. The page indicates that they became part of an extended Harris family migration for apparently Harris family members were in Canada prior to 1850. There is a Harris patriarch present, Samuel, age 73. See notes for Mary Ann. Death reg. 007973-78 Adelaide Twp., Middlesex Co. George Brothers died 23 March 1878. Age 75. Farmer. Born England. Church of England. Cause of death general debility one year. Physician Dr. Hoare. Informant George E. Brothers, Adelaide. A place of burial for George and Mary Ann has yet to be found. |
