Note | The 1842 Upper Canada census shows a John Bray as holding the south halves of lots 14 and 15 on the 3rd concession of Dumfries Township. This is the portion of the township that was later South Dumfries when the county era came into being and was a part of Brant County. The 1891 Chapman biography for Israel dates his birth to April 17, 1830, in Brant County, and states that his father was John Bray. At the time of Israel's birth, this would have been Dumfries Township in the Gore District of Upper Canada. Some land records do show this locale as being in Halton County, but this was not administrative, but rather an electoral riding. Israel's biography in the 1891 Chapman book identifies his mother as Joanna Swayze. As mentioned, the 1842 census shows John Bray, apparently Israel's father, as holding the south halves of lots 14 and 15 on the 3rd concession. John owned and operated lot 14, but lot 15's owner is shown as Jesse Bray. John is also shown as being on lot 14 at the time of the 1832 Dumfries East of the Grand River census and assessment and Jesse is shown on lot 15.
