Note | A History of the People of Troy, 1947, tells that Charlotte Wood, the daughter of Lewis Wood and Asenath Smith, married Israel Bray. No other information is provided. The 1860 U.S. census as enumerated at Bengal, Clinton County, Michigan, shows Charlotte, age 22, married to Isaac M. Bray, age 30. The Troy history is correct, however, for later census information does show his name as Israel. Find-a-Grave provides a photo essay of stones in Bray Cemetery in Clinton County. A worn stone is there for Charlotte. Her year of birth, 1837, is quite readable. Her year of death is worn and the transcription given shows her death in 1886. A more accurate interpretation would be a death year of 1866. The first six at least is quite readable and, considering that Israel remarried in 1867, this should be correct. More has been found. See the Portrait and Biographical Albu of Clinton and Shiawassee Counties, Michigan, Chapman Bros., 1891, pages 642 and 645. This is an extensive biography of Israel M. Bray and confirms the death of Charlotte Wood as being in 1866. It states that they were married in March of 1854 and it goes on to tell that they came to Bengal Township in Clinton County of Michigan in 1857. Israel's marriage to Mary Nelson is mentioned and a list of children by Charlotte and Mary is provided. |
