Informant Jamieson Black, Port Dalhousie. A death registration has not been found for either George or his older brother John. The family gravestone records George's death as occuring on March 4, 1878. The brothers died within 6 days of each other. This would indicate an epidemic, perhaps diptheria. Indeed, the registrar at Port Dalhousie records nine deaths between February and May, six of them showing diptheria as the cause. We do not know just when the family moved from Port Dalhousie to St. Catharines, but George and John's sister Helen were born in Port Dalhousie in 1880 and the family is in St. Catharines at the time of the 1881 census. |
