Note | Familysearch has a database, Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, FHL microfilm 1,067,971. This is transcription only and shows Robert Maxwell's date of birth as 22 Mar 1834. It shows his Christening date as 30 Mar 1834 and the Christening place as Tundergarth, Dumfries, Scotland. It also shows his parents as James Maxwell and Janet Saunders. See notes under James Scott, Robert's father-in-law with regard to Robert's presence in the household in the 1851 census. See notes under Jane. The Maxwells were in Morris Township of Huron County as of the 1861 census and moved to Turnberry between the censuses of 1881 and 1891. McGill University's Canadian County Atlas Digital Project has an extract from an atlas dated 1879. This places the family on lot 17 of the 1st concession of Morris Township. They had 49 acres and their postal address was Bluevale. Bluevale was in Turnberry Township, but the village bordered Morris Township. A post office was established at Bluevale in 1859. Lot 17 is roughly mid way between Bluevale and Wingham. The only other comment here is that if Robert and Jane spent time with Jane's parents in Oxford County prior to their move to Stanley Township in Huron County, documentation to support this has yet to be found. Robert was a joiner (carpenter) in Scotland as of the 1851 census. By 1861 in Stanley Township, Huron County, Canada, he is described as a farmer. No doubt his carpenter skills served him well, but there was probably a family connection in Morris Township that aided the Maxwell's settlement, one that isn't obvious by looking at the 1861 census and certainly not from the 1879 atlas extracts. Death reg. 012180-17 Mersea Twp., Essex Co. Robert Maxwell died March 27th, 1917, at Lot 4, Con 1, Mersea Tp. Age 83, born Scotland, widower, gentleman. Parents James Maxwell and Janet Saunders. Physician Dr. James Reid. Informant W. Maxwell, Leamington. Burial Leamington Cemetery. Robert and Jane are actually buried in Lakeview Cemetery at Leamington. CanGenWeb has a reasonably clear photograph of their gravestone and Robert's date of birth is shown as March 22, 1834. This agrees with his date of birth as it appears on his birth record as shown above. |
