Date of birth 20 Jul 1834. Parents James Scott and Helen W. Nichol. Robert and Jane are first found in records for Canada in the 1861 census at Morris Township in Huron County. Robert and Jane both shown as 27, born in Scotland, and Robert is described as a farmer. With them are two children, Ellen, age 5, and James, age 3. Both children are shown as being born in Canada. In the 1871 census they have with them 7 children. The 1881 census was, apparently, badly microfilmed, but the page with the family has had a mainly readable image extracted from it by Library & Archives Canada. There is one more child present, but one is now married and away, so there are still 7 children in the household. By the time of the 1891 census, Robert and Jane have moved to Turnberry Township in Huron County. In 1901, they are still in Turnberry. This census tells that they came to Canada in 1860. The 1911 census in Turnberry tells that they came to Canada in 1855. Considering that their firstborn, Ellen, was born in Canada in approximately 1856, the 1911 census will be closer to accurate. The list of children for Robert and Jane is based on the names as they appear in the 1871 and 1881 censuses and their years of birth are approximated based on their ages as shown unless more direct evidence is mentioned. Death reg. 012337-16 Mersea Twp., Essex Co. Jean Scott died August 25th 1916 at Mersea Twp. Age 82, born Scotland. Married. Parents James Scott and Ellen Nicol. Physician Dr. James Reid. Informant Robert Maxwell, Leamington. Jean/Jane is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Leamington, with her husband Robert. CanGenWeb has a readable photograph of their stone and her date of birth on the stone reads July 19, 1834. Her date of birth on her birth and baptism record shown above is one day later, July 20, 1834. |
