Note | Birth reg. 012450-72 Blenheim Twp., Oxford Co. Stephen N. Moffat born 5 October, 1872. Parents John Moffat, farmer, and Isabella Henderson. Physician Dr. J.B. Rounds. Informant John Moffat, Blenheim. Stephen is usually shown in census information when he is with his parents as Nisbet S. Moffat, or Moffatt. The 1921 census shows Stephen N. Moffat with his wife Janet and daughters Ruth and Margaret in the town of Paris. He is a bank manager. S. N. Moffat, retired, is shown in Paris with daughter Margaret at the time of the 1949 federal election. While the family name was originally spelled with two T's (at times his parents appear to have spelled the name either way) Stephen is shown with one T at this point. Just why his parents named him as they did, isn't immediately obvious. The name Stephen Nisbet was rather prominent in Beverly Township, perhaps mainly in the Troy area, but we have no information that father John Moffatt spent any time in Beverly. Considering that he was born in Dumfries Township, bordering on Beverly, it's certainly a possibility that he spent some time working for Stephen Nisbet of Beverly Township in his youth, thought well of him and so named a son after him. A stronger reason for the name may be that there was a Nisbet-Moffatt connection. John Moffatt, Stephen's father, was the son of Stephen Moffatt and Jane Thompson. The 1947 booklet, A History of the People of Troy (see page 24) has a Nisbet tree. This begins with: Stephen Nisbet married Miss Thompson. There children were... Was Stephen Nisbet Jane Thompson's brother-in-law? No evidence for this has been found and, yes, the evidence is quite slender and may be discounted. |
